MID Lifts Limits on Water Supply After Late-Season Storms
Concerns remain about next year's supply
Merced Irrigation District has removed all supply limitations on water use this year. Following a motion by Director Dave Long, and a second by Director Gino Pedretti, today the Board voted unanimously to lift limits on water supplies to irrigators within Merced Irrigation District. This also includes the water users of the El Nido area, who had been limited to 50 percent of MID's available water supply.
A series of late-season storms helped provide 170,000 acre feet of additional supply in Lake McClure for a total of 280,000 acre feet, according to the California Department of Water Resources. Board Director Tim Pellissier specifically warned growers at today's meeting that although the water was being made available, they should plan for a dry year next year. Weekend Storms Bring Needed Rain, But Fall Short of Ending Dry Year
MERCED, CA - The series of storm that swept through California over the weekend provided much-needed water for Merced County growers. However, the storms fell far short of providing significant precipitation and snowpack needed to pull the region out of a dry year. "This was a much-needed shot in the arm, but we are definitely not out of the woods," said Hicham ElTal, Deputy General Manager of Water Resources for Merced Irrigation District. "We had a busy weekend and we were happy to have the work."

Dear Valued MID Grower:
The Central California Region is facing the driest year on record. Although we had hoped that more precipitation would occur in February and March, the weather simply didn't materialize. As a result, Merced Irrigation District has considered all factors and set a water supply availability to growers. This year, MID water customers will have available 4-acre-feet of water per acre. The allotment is per water account number. Former El Nido Irrigation District growers are allocated 50 percent of the available water supply, or a 2-acre-foot per acre supply. Water can only be applied to the water account number to which it's been allocated. No water trading between water account numbers will be allowed. These measures are all being taken to allow for a successful growing season this year considering available surface supply and conjunctive groundwater pumping without emptying Lake McClure.
